3rd Period Chemistry Class
September 12,2013
Partner: Stephanie Medina
-Materials:
- Bubble wrap
- Rubber bands
- Cotton balls
- 1 Bean can
-Hypothesis
I think that the bubble wrap would prevent the egg from breaking and the cotton balls will prevent it from hitting the can or moving around in the can.
-Measurements
- Mass of structure without the egg: 64.83g
- Calculation with that mass: score = 2000/64.83g x 5
- Number of points and grade obtained: 154.25 = B
- Mass of structure with the egg: 138.86g
- Test #1: From the height of the back door of the classroom. The egg survived.
- Test #2: Thrown in the air and fell on the floor. The egg survived.
- Final Test (thrown in the air by the teacher): It cracked but did not break, just a little crack.
-Lab Questions
- Explain your final design in 2-3 sentences, include materials. * My final design is the egg wrapped in bubble wrap, held together by 2 rubber bands. Before placing the egg in the can, put cotton balls in the bottom. After, place the egg in the center of the can and while holding the egg in the center, place cotton balls around the egg. At the end, place cotton balls until the can is full and tape the can sealed.
- How was the design modified from your initial hypothesis to improve your results? * I did not change my initial design do to the fact that it did not break nor crack on the first two test. I guess the impact was to much on the third throw, which resulted in the egg cracking a little.
- What was the purpose of having multiple test drops of your structure? * The purpose of having all the test drops was to see if the structure needed to be modified.
- Explain why your structure did or did not make the egg break. * I believe the egg cracked because the pressure of the can falling made the rubber bands squeeze the egg for a small period of time, which caused it to crack a little.
- If you could change your design in any way, what would you have done differently? * I would remove the rubber bands and put more cotton balls or remove the rubber bands and the cotton balls and just add more bubble wrap and leave it with just the bubble wrap.
